My thesis is that to get a true picture of innovation in IT, you have to consider three separate sources: academic research, entrepreneurial activity, and open-source software development. Academic research, which includes traditional corporate R&D as well, is primarily funded by government R&D money or corporate sponsors. Entrepreneurial activity is primarily funded by venture dollars. Open source is fueled by compensation other than money. I have a tough time looking at the output of those three groups and concluding that we're losing our innovative edge. Combined, the innovative energy in these three groups is astounding.
