Right now almost every web application has an Apache server fronting a database box running MySQL or its closed source equivalent like Oracle, DB2, or SQL Server. The data bottleneck in all those applications is the SQL box, which is generally doing a very simple job in a very complex manner that made total sense for minicomputers in 1975 but doesn’t make as much sense today. Five years from now the situation will be very different with HBase running everywhere, the dedicated SQL box eliminated completely, and the database shared across redundant web servers like a micro-Google.

- Roberto "X" Cringely, em "The Sequel Dilemma"

Hard work is where our job security, our financial profit, and our future joy lie.

It's hard work to make difficult emotional decisions, such as quitting a job and setting out on your own. It's hard work to invent a new system, service, or process that's remarkable. It's hard work to tell your boss that he's being intellectually and emotionally lazy. It's easier to stand by and watch the company fade into oblivion. It's hard work to tell senior management to abandon something that it has been doing for a long time in favor of a new and apparently risky alternative. It's hard work to make good decisions with less than all of the data.

- Seth Godin ("Labor Day")

"What does it say about a company when it takes six months for it to release the schedule of when it will release the beta of the fix to the operating system it took more than five years to build?"

- Roberto X, no InfoWorld. Saca só outro graffiare do mesmo artigo:

"At Microsoft, quality is job SP1."

I can't deal with stuff that "might" work. ...I'm not interested in wasting half my processing and rendering power to have semi-transparent menus. That's just retarded. I'm not ready to install 4 gigs of ram in machines to get the same performance I would get out of 1 gig if I'm using XP. I don't want to teach users yet another gui for both the OS and the office application. I simply cannot stand going to OOXML and lose all choice forever. Microsoft says they're "people ready." I'm still wondering if I'm Microsoft ready.

Clueless corporate clones struggling desperately to look hip

No one is even afraid of Microsoft anymore. They still make a lot of money—so does IBM, for that matter. But they're not dangerous.

- Paul Graham ("Microsoft is Dead")

- Mark Frauenfelder (no BoingBoing)

Man, I wish I smoked weed like I used to in graduate school. I'd have a 24-hour party to watch the sunset across the globe on Google Earth. No, really. I mean....wow, man.

What we need is:
  • an email client that is smart about what I'm doing and what my opted in colleagues are doing. Once that gains traction, plenty of vendors will work to integrate with it.
  • a cell phone and cell phone provider that is not just a phone.
  • a word processor that knows about everything I've written and what's on the web that's related to what I'm writing now.
  • moves by Google and Yahoo and others to make it easy for us to become non-anonymous, all the time, everywhere we go.
