Geronimo!!!

26 novembro 2004

You can look at the Apache Software Foundation's Geronimo project from two perspectives. For some developers, services firms and customers, Geronimo is the fulfillment of the dream: a commoditized, open J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) server market. For some major application server players, Geronimo is the realization of a nightmare: a commoditized, open J2EE server market.

O fato é que ele bagunça bem o cenário (como já era previsto). Artigo e série especial sobre o futuro do Java, ambos da eWeek, merecem uma lida.

"Microsoft is up to its usual FUD [fear, uncertainty and doubt]," said Dan Ravicher, author of the study Microsoft cites, who is an attorney and executive director of PUBPAT (the Public Patent Foundation).

"Open source faces no more, if not less, legal risk than proprietary software. The market needs to understand that the study Microsoft is citing actually proves the opposite of what they claim it does."

"There is no reason to believe that GNU/Linux has any greater risk of infringing patents than Windows, Unix-based or any other functionally similar operating system. Why? Because patents are infringed by specific structures that accomplish specific functionality," Ravicher said.

"Patents don't care how the infringing article is distributed, be it under an open-source license, a proprietary license or not at all. Therefore, if a patent infringes on Linux, it probably also infringes on Unix, Windows, etc.," he said.

In fact, the study said Linux potentially violates 283 software patents, not "over 228" as Ballmer said in his speech.

"The point of the study was actually to eliminate the FUD about Linux's alleged legal problems by attaching a quantifiable measure versus the speculation," he said. "And the number we found, to anyone familiar with this issue, is so average as to be boring; almost any piece of software potentially infringes at least that many patents."

Mr Ballmer precisa pensar numa versão 3.0 do "Get the Facts"...
E começar a tomar Fosfosol tb.

A história inteira tá aqui.

Sharman Networks, distributor of the Kazaa file-sharing software, on Monday launched its latest version, which enables users to make free online calls anywhere in the world.

Kazaa v3.0 includes the integration of Internet telephony software from Skype Technologies SA and also offers advanced search capabilities and a free weblog trial. Skype, headquartered in Luxembourg, is the newest venture of Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, co-founders of Kazaa and Altnet, a secure peer-to-peer network.

Combinação legal e promissora. Minha dúvida é onde isso tudo vai dar...

Já postei algumas teorias há algumas semanas.

Há novas neste comentário do David Cursey, da eWeek: "Can the Free Internet Survive?"

Get Firefox!

Sun X HP

25 novembro 2004

A Sun tá batendo cada vez mais pesado na HP. Nova campanha começa assim:

"With impending end-of-life of HP's enterprise platforms, customers face inevitable change."

A campanha vende (nas linhas), serviços de migração. Mas a estratégia escondida nas entrelinhas e nos posts do Schwartz é que chamam a atenção.
